We know that getting your cat to the vet can be a challenge, but these tips can help make the experience less stressful – for you and your cat!
1. Carrier Considerations
Choosing the right carrier for your cat can make all the difference. Hard sided carriers that open from the top and the front are best. Often, your vet can perform the exam while the cat sits in the lower half of the carrier.
If your cat only uses the carrier to visit the vet, she will associate the carrier with stress and fear. Try leaving the carrier out in your home so that your cat can get accustomed to it in non-threatening situations. Place treats, cat toys, or your cat’s favorite bedding in the carrier. Over time your cat will come to view it as a safe place.
2. Pheromone Treatment
You may also want to try using a synthetic feline facial pheromone (such as Feliway) in the carrier prior to leaving for your appointment. Feliway** is available as both a spray and a wipe. Wipe the interior of the carrier, or spray a towel or blanket and place it over the carrier. This may help further reduce the stressfulness of the experience, especially in a busy pet-filled waiting room.
3. Relax!
Your cats will pick up on your anxiety. Keep calm. The more comfortable you are, the more comfortable your cat is likely to be!
